Killer Berries

In a University of Florida study published in January,
extracts from acai berries "triggered a self destruct response
in up to 86 percent of leukemia cells tested, said Stephen Talcott,
an assistant professor with UF's Institute of Food and Agricultural
Sciences." Now this doesn't necessarily translate into the berry
destroying cancer cells in the human body or preventing cancer,
but it is pretty uplifting research and follows on the heels of
similar studies that demonstrated antioxidant-containing fruits' (mangos,
grapes and guavas) ability to kill cancer cells in the lab environment.

The berries grow on a species of Amazonian palm tree and have been
used traditionally to treat digestive disorders and skin conditions.
The fruit is dark-purple and often compared to a blueberry. The fruit
is full of B vitamins, iron, fiber, Omega-3 fatty acids and anthocyanin,
a member of the flavonoid class of antioxidants. In Brazil, surfers
would often puree the berries into a fruit smoothee, mixed with
guarana syrup.

A new "Machine" drink is very exciting, even if it contains
prunes. Naked is also launching an "energy" line, supplimenting
the protein, superfood, well-being, antioxidant and just juice lines
they already carry. What's the deal with this South American
acai fruit anyway? Is it the pomegranate of 2006?
I wonder when our lil cowtown markets are going to start
carrying these tasty beverages. Can't wait.

Post-Holiday Wrap-up

Well I was very pleased that the Brothers Green practiced this weekend in anticipation of
the Wakarusa Music Festival. Their show is coming up in 10 days from today, so
it was about time they got together and practiced.
Adam Maese has announced that he will also be attending the Festival. Bravo,
Adam, for making a real mature decision.
Devin Kelly was in town this weekend. We got together on Saturday night
and raged Westport (Kelly's and Buzzard Beach). Later, we took a cab (how
responsible) to Meg's house on Gennesse and raged some more. Hussey
and I ended up wrestling after some rum shots (this seems to be a reoccuring
trend when the twos of us get drunk together). I might have gotten the best
of him this round (as opposed to at Lewis and Clark State Park when my
face was bloodied) as I tore his shorts. Completely unintentional, Jason,
and I apologize. Meg was pissed about the rough-housing and took her
angst out not on us but George Clarke and Devin, two innocent bystanders
whose only connection to the fight was that they came with me. She told them
off and demanded that Devin help paint her house the next day; needless
to say, he didn't agree to such terms, which only further enraged our hostess.
I took the violence back to our house as Devin and I quarelled over control
of Jambase Rhapsody, which Devin admits has been the cause of past violence
in houses equipped with the service.
The hangover was zippy for the first half of the day. Katy complained that I
talked incessantly which can be the case, although the hangover takes an
entirely different course after the alcohol has fully worn off. The meal at
McCoy's was so-so, then we went to Sterling's to visit the young Devin Sterling
Levon Brown. The meeting of the two Devins was an overwhelming success.
The Brothers Green were spray-painting CD covers in the backyard while Sterling
passed my wedding gift to him, a bottle of scotch aged 10 years that unfortunately
spent a very hot weekend in the trunk of his car. The sip I took nearly drove me
to vomit, and being downwind from the spray painting did not assist me in my
fragile state. Devin has hinted he may move back to KC; he misses our BBQ,
lower cost of living and poorly run major league sports teams no doubt--although
the jury is still out on the Chiefs. Can they sign Ty Law? As of this post, it doesn't
seem likely.

Zombified

I did not get much sleep last night and so my words come out clumsily.
The One Hitters won both our softball games last night and thus begin the summer
season auspiciously with a 2-0 record. We played an enthusiastic team from Burns
and McDonald, they were newcomers to E league softball. These kids were young,
fresh off the baseball diamond and therefore not mellow enough for
the beer swiggin, pot bellied life of a softball player. They will learn,
losing can teach you so much about life. We should be goddamn
wisemen by this point. They didn't look like engineers and my brother
speculated that maybe they were janitors at the huge complex on Ward Parkway.
You know, it's next to the Jewish Synagogue (Temple?) and it U-shaped.
Very interesting architectural design.

Summer hours are here at the National Catholic Reporter, we leave at noon on Fridays,
but I'm leaving even earlier today, utilizing those personal hours, so I can get an eye
exam and purchase some prescription sunglasses. Then to fix the air
conditioner, nap and off to the Cemetery to pay my 'spects to the ancestors.
Much love to those early fowl who scouted the ponds and marsh areas of
the past so that this Canadian could fly. At 20,000 feet, I have a view that
most of you only hear about from your friends who take airplanes places, ah shit,
that skill just isn't unique anymore.

DK in town this weekend, maybe I'll post some pictures of his epic stay, but
it's not bloody likely cause I have no digi shooter. Maybe I'll scan some prints
taken from Katy's Canon--yes, I promise you, the dedicated readers of my
first blog, in recognition of this historic moment, pictorial access to the good times
had when DK decided to pay respects to his high school stomping grounds--
maybe we'll even look up Steve Harris and Conor Mulcahey and start a new series,
"Where are they Now"--we could run this as a feature here on the blog. I'm still
zombified, so excuse the rambling. My folks are taking Katy, Andy and I out to
dinner this evening.

My votes-- Good Mexican (Katy's Grandma's Spot in JoCo, not sure the name), PotPie, Brio
Frondizi's, Circe, Blue Koi (always a good choice), the new restaurant in the old Matador's,
Il Centro, the Peach Tree. Probably leaning towards Frondizi's or Matador's replacement
because of the outside dining options.
